SVS specialists, Dr. Ryan Cavanaugh and Dr. Jennifer Messinger, diagnosed “Rudy” with a rare congenital lung disease called Congenital Lobar Emphysema.

Rudy, a resident of Lee County Domestic Animal Services (LCDAS) and member of Lee County’s “Cell Dog” Program, needed surgery urgently to have the diseased lung removed. The teams at LCDAS, Lee County Sheriff, and SVS joined forces to give Rudy a fair chance at life. In return, Rudy has provided tremendous inspiration and joy to his caregivers and new friends. No doubt Rudy will go on to provide companionship and love to a deserving family in the future.

Although this story made the local news, LCDAS is knee-deep in cases like Rudy’s each and every day. Lee County Domestic Animal Services needs the support of the community to continue this mission, and thanks to Rudy’s case and many others like it, LCDAS was recently awarded $25,000 from the Petco Foundation. This award will help provide care for the less fortunate animals of our county. Please enjoy the video below.
