Did You Know… Pets Suffer From A-Fib Too?

Lately, it seems like every time you turn on the television, you see a commercial about atrial fibrillation, or ‘A-Fib.” Did you know dogs suffer from this same disease?
From 2014-2016, SVS participated in the clinical trial: Efficacy of Ranolazine for Preventing Relapse of Atrial Fibrillation in Dogs with Heart Disease. We would like to share the story of one of the participants…
Meet Azha, a 13-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback. Cardiologist, Dr. Sarah Scruggs, was able to regulate the electrical impulses in Azha’s heart through cardioversion, then Azha participated in the trial by taking a medication called ranolazine. Though Azha has since passed, she was able to experience a normal sinus rhythm for an amazing 6 months. This treatment provided Azha a quality of life that may not have been possible without the clinical trial.
We are still awaiting the results of the clinical trial to see if ranolazine is helpful in the treatment of A-Fib in dogs. And we are thankful to have Dr. Scruggs on our team to care for pets with heart disease.
